-
-
takes place in
- Jewish Rabbi’s teach that this is the first family- Adam; (God’s son, not in the sense of Jesus but made in God’s image, His creation) Eve wife; God is Eve’s father-in-law (Adam and Eve is the first marriage)
- Satan tries to destroy family

- Image for this figure- male figure- Satan
- Lucifer- brightest of angels- light- better translated
- Male figure- not snake (more crafty)
-
V2. where is the man?
- In the middle east, never a women alone in a public setting. Always be with husband or brother. Adam is with her
- Satan calls God- “Elohim” – Satan doesn’t have a relationship with God
- Any tree? NO God didn’t say that
- Where is Adam? ‘we’ V2. Adam is right there
- Jesus is the new Adam. Jesus faced death even though scared. Adam was scared to death and wouldn’t do anything about it.
- Paul call Jesus the New Adam
-
V2. “Elohim” Eve is
being seduced by the shining one- Satan
- ‘Touch it’ – NO God didn’t say that
- Adam was scared and exaggerates danger- Eve wasn’t around when God announced the death and told him not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
- Adam told Eve not to even touch it because he wanted to make sure she wouldn’t go near it.
- Fruit is not Apple- no apple are in middle east
- Satan is probably holding it, he is not dead
- Adam is not doing anything
-
V6. Touched it and ate- not
dead yet
- Gave to husband WHO WAS STADING THERE
- Fig leaves are big
-
Definition of sin: Condition of alienation and separation
of God that manifests itself in the stupid things we do.
-
1. Sin always begins small
-
2. Sin distorts judgment – small part of cancer
-
3. Sin gets bigger
-
4. Sin always lead to death- just like cancer- Rom 3:23, Rom 6:23
-
5. Cascades down generation- God doesn’t want it, but always
manages to snowball
-
V8. married
-
Hid from God
-
God knew where they were.
-
God goes to Adam FIRST
-
Eve and Satan talking the whole time- but goes to Adam first, he
is responsible
-
He should have protected her, he disobeyed; she was deceived
-
Psalm 29- 1000 B.C.
-
V3-9- the voice of the Lord
-
Cedar tree- can be 150 feet tall
-
Gen 3:11- God knew, He is speaking as a father
-
V12- Adam blames God and
Eve
-
V13- Now God goes to Eve

Satan
-
Then we see got give the judgments to Satan, then Eve, then Adam
-
Perfect Hebrew poetry
-
V14- Judgment- Satan-
cursed above wild animals – not a animal

snakes they will think of you
-
…snakes don’t eat dust

animal- animal dies (never should have)
-
Death follows sin
-

God is merciful – didn’t want man to live forever in sin so He
guarded the tree of life
-
God didn’t destroy the tree to show Adam and Eve there was still
hope one day
-
Angels guard the tree- Angels existed way before man was around
-
Rev. 22 (last page) –tree
of life – no more curse – the Bible is a complete beautiful work, perfect
from beginning to end.
Genesis 4
- Adam and Eve live over 900 years- can I prove that?
-
V4- 930 years
- Jewish Birthday is the 1st day your born
- Already been in the womb for 9 months (counted as whole year)
- Point is he lived a long time and had lots of children
- Flocks- sheep and goats (10:1) ten sheep to 1 goat
- Leviticus- many offering could be grain.
- God didn’t approve of Cain’s offering
- Not because it wasn’t an animal (Leviticus)
- Not because he was the firstborn (Jesus was firstborn)
- The firstborn are breast fed for twice as long as others
- 4 years of breast feeding
- God didn’t except Cain’s offering because… Cain brought ‘some’ of the fruits of the soil- not the best
-
V.2 Abel gave ‘fat
portions of some’ – he gave best
- Matter of the heart
- Does God need that? No- but God wants your desire and wanting to give
-
1 Peter 5:8 –Satan prowls
like a roaring lion
- Cain is Jealous (Hebrews tells us this)
- V.6 Cain brought Abel out to his fields
- Attacked “ripped limb from limb” – similar to energy of a lion attacking someone
- “Am I my brother’s keeper?” answer is -YES!
-
V.10 “Listen!” can you
see how it hurts God and sin cries out
- Sorry for being caught and the punishment… not for the sin
- Other brothers will kill him
- Suggest possibly 400 years pass before Cain kills Abel
-
v.15 God gives him a mark-
curse in itself
- who is his wife? – one of his sisters-
- only explanation
- this wouldn’t be a danger back then
- the gene pool would not have a negative effect- not degenerated like today
- many people already around
- builds a city- major population increase in a quick period of time
- kicked out of fields, now in city
- Cain names his son Enoch- not the Enoch that walks with the Lord later on in the narrative.
-
V18 Lamech- important
- Lamech is the 7th generation on Cains family line
- Sin cascades through generations
- Lamech married two women- not God’s plan
-
V.23 killed a man for
wounding him
- “seventy-seven times worse”
- The evilest man yet
-
Mathew 18:21-
- Peter comes to Jesus with a question
- ‘brother’ Peter’s brother Andrew.
- How many times should I forgive him?
- Jesus says 77 times.
- Why that number?
- Jesus knew who Lamech was, studied Gen 4
-
V.25-
Adam and Eve’s child- Seth (important)
- Seth is the new firstborn
-
V.26- ‘call upon the name
of the Lord’ – witnessing

Genesis
5
- Biblical Genealogy the final person is the point of the genealogy
- Focuses on the last person at the end of genealogy
-
V.1-image of God. we
learned in Genesis 1 & 2
- Important- V.3 Seth in the image and likeness of Adam- who is in the image and likeness of God (so Seth is made in the image of God)
- So are you and I are made in the image and likeness of God. Treat others the same way.
- Sethites are ‘sons of God’
- Adam lived 930 years then died- point is it’s a long time
-
V.11 – then he died
-
V.14- then he died
-
V.17- then he died
-
V.20- then he died
- Walking through a graveyard
- This is new to the narrative- death not by murder- just … death
-
V.22-24 Enoch walked with
God and then… was no more.
-
God took him away- assumed
into heaven- V.24
- He didn’t die
- Elijah never dies as well
- Moses died and is buried by God (Deuteronomy 34)
-
Hebrews 11:
-
V27. Methuselah lived 969
years
- He was the oldest man to ever live
-
V28 Noah is born
Genesis 6-
“Sanctify
them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:17 (NKJV)
-
Noah has 3 sons (Gen 5v32)
o Shem
o Ham
o Japheth
-
V.1-6
- Two possible interpretations:
o “Sons of God”
§
Seth’s
line of descendents (Gen 5v3)
§
/OR/
Demons (Job 1:6- same phrase is used to
refer to angels)
- Seth’s line took daughters (Cain’s descendants) to be wives and had sexual relations
- /OR/ Demons took wives and had sexual relations (2 Peter 2:4-6)
-
V3. – ‘120 years’-
could mean the time of grace for them to repent
-
V4. Naphilim- “giants”
- The word “hero” by oneself in the Bible is a negative thing- A true hero is one who stands for God, not himself
- ‘renown’ – making a name for oneself
-
V5. – Elohim saw that
every thought of man was wicked all the time
- God says He has to start over- He was grieved that He had made man (sin hurts God)
-
Sin: is a condition of separation and alienation of God that
manifests itself in the stupid things we do
o
Five Characteristics
§
Starts small
§
Distorts Judgment
§
Always gets bigger
§
Left untreated, always leads to death
§
Cascades throughout generations
- This sequence of events doesn’t have to happen, its not God’s plan, but it will happen unless we let God intervene
-
V9. ‘perfect’ –
genuinely righteous- blameless
-
“Walked
with God” – like Enoch (taken up to be with God; did not die Gen.5v24)
-
Champion from God
o
Shem- oldest
o
Ham- middle
o
Japheth- youngest
-
V11. Violent- began with
Cain
-
V13. God has to start over
again- similarities
o
Beginning Creation
§
Water over face of the deep
§
One family populates
§
Orderly
o Starting Over with Flood
§ Water floods the earth
§ One man’s family populates
§ Orderly
- One problem… a bad egg in one of Noah’s sons ( will study next week)
-
V14 – “
- A wood that must have been around thin the fertile crescent
- NO water or ocean or sea around Noah lived
- This would have been major faith on Noah’s part
-
V16.-18 inches – about a
cubit
- 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high
- Cubit- about the length from the tip of your fingers to the end of your hand
- A little bigger than the size of a World War to battle cruiser
- 3 decks- volume to fill ship
- Bob like a cork
-
V17- fish would be fine
-
V18- 8 people will be saved
-
V19- God brings the animals
to Noah
-
-
How many of each animal?
-
Genesis 6:19, 20 –
“bring two of every kind…”
- Genesis 7:2,3- “take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female…”
-
Genesis
7:8,9- speaks of the manner or animals entering the ark not the number
- 7 (three pairs, with another animal used for sacrifice) entered the ark by twos
- In Jewish literary practices a general statement would be made and then the details stated later
-“ two of every kind” (General Statement)
-“seven of ever clean; two of every non-clean” (Details that fill in general statement)
-common in ancient literature
-
clean and unclean (Lev 7:19-21)
- Beautifully crafted narrative-
o Begins with 7 days
o Then 40 days
o Then 150 days
§ Center part of story
o then 150 days
o then 40 days
o then 7 days
o then 7 final days
- Jewish poetry
- Master piece of literature
- Doesn’t mean this event did not happen just that it was very orderly
-
V20.- no place for birds to
rest- they must be on the ark
-
Animals will come to Noah
(v.20)
- Almost every ancient culture has a flood story; where the earth is destroyed and a family is saved
- Is the story literal? YES!!!!
- You could find the ark… reassemble it… and people still would not believe it happened
- The people told Jesus to come off the cross and they still would not have believed.
- He rose from the dead and they still didn’t believe
- This flood event happened
- If you can not believe something in Book of Genesis you will have a big problem believing something in Book of Matthew.
-
-
How could they fit all the
animals on the ark?
- 125,000 sheep could have fit on the ark
- Maximum 79,000 animals that were on the ark
- 100 years of zoology studies have shown us it is possible
- From one ‘sweet pea’ there have now been 500 different kinds and variations of peas since the year 1700
- They are all peas but different types.
- From one dog, we now have 200 different kinds of dogs.
- Poodles, Terriers, Labs, Chows, ext. but all are dogs.
- Didn’t evolve.
Same thing with the animals on the are; they would only need one kind of dog… not 50 types of dogs.
-
The ark had 3 decks (Gen
6:16)
-
- 1,396,00 cubic feet

V3.
– Now people can eat meet
V4.
– Why drain the blood?
- when you consume the blood you consume the vitals (its energy)
- pagans would consume the blood to absorb the animals ‘power’
- “life” is symbolized in “blood”
V5.- God just wiped out every living thing because of violence
- To God, life is so precious.
V6.-
this supports capital punishments
- in Genesis 9:6 you can not get around this … it teaches that premeditative murder must be met with death
V11.-
covenant with man- never to destroy the
earth by water
-in the book of Revelation God destroys it will fire and brimstone
V12.- a covenant sign was a visible seal and reminder of covenant commitments.
- Rainbow: covenant with Noah
- Circumcision: covenant with Abraham (Gen 17:11)
-
Sabbath: covenant with
V13.- sign: bow in the heavens
- like a bow and arrow
- God remembers the covenant
- Bow is faced towards God
- Symbolize if God ever broke the covenant it would shoot towards God
In Genesis 7-9 the Hebrew word for God is “Elohim”
(God of universe not the personal God)
V18.- Shem, Ham, and Japheth (Noah’s sons)
-Ham the father of
- Canaanites are around at the time Moses was writing
- In Chapter 10 we learn about each son’ descendants
V20. – Vineyard- takes awhile to grow and get produce
- “A man of the soil”- play on words- Noah connected to Adam- Adam from the soil… Noah, a man of the soil
- took fruit from plant and sinned (just like Gen 3)
V20-
“lay uncovered” or “lay naked”
- Hebrew- literally meant “in so much of a drunk stupor he could not keep himself and the people in the tent covered” (less words than that, but that is the meaning J)
- His wife would be in the tent (others in the tent)
- The terms are not sexually charged (it’s the Bible!)
- Noah could not protect his wife (too drunk)
V23- Shem and Japheth walked backwards and covered their father
- something happened in that tent
- Ham is proud of whatever happened.
V24- Noah just now realizes what’s going on.
- found out what his youngest son had done (Ham did it not Japheth)
- Ham became the lowest (youngest)
- In Jewish culture the oldest received the blessing
V25-
- Ham had to commit incest
- It’s the only explanation for the sin (there was a sin committed in the tent) v24
- Why would he do this?
- This sin happens a lot in the Bible
- Rape in the Bible and the time period was a power conquest
- Ham’s way of saying to Noah- you can’t stop me
- When this occurs in the Bible the son does this to show he is better than his dad and the father can no longer control the house
- This same thing happens to Jacob
- Ruben rapes his step-mom to show that he would now be in control of the household
-
Gen. 19 (same thing
happens to
How
can this be suggested?
-
Leviticus 18:1-9
-
God is telling the Israelites not to participate in the evil
things of
-
1st thing he says not to do is… have sexual relations
with any relative (v6-8)
-
The people in
- Who are the Canaanites? Ham’s decedents
- The death the Canaanites eventually occurs
-Sin is now back in the narrative
Noah
revamps in his mind the order of sons. (v26) Now is it Shem, Japheth, and Ham
- seventy nations represented in the list in Genesis 10
- seven is the recurring theme in this narrative
- Japheth- European and Indian places
-
Ham- Cushites (some would claim located in
o Queen of Sheba- African
o Women of Color
o Moses marries a Cushite (or Ethiopian) (Numbers 12)

Continuation
of Chapter 14-
- Some think that Melchizedek is Shem
- Shem could possible outlive Abram
- Martin Luther agrees with this
- Genealogy would be a problem for this theory
- Gen 14:22
- “taking an oath”- in Jewish culture it is very personal for a man
- Most of the time between a son and his father
- The sons hand is placed on the fathers inner thigh “raised my hand to the Lord” (v22) and they would take a oath- vitals, descendents
- Not only to the father or whoever the oath is with, but to their generations as well
- 1500 years the priesthood had been around and perfection was still not obtained
- Aaron (Moses’ brother) has 4 sons- two of them die because they get drunk and offer an unauthorized sacrifice
- A perfect sacrifice had to be offered- Jesus

- Deuteronomy was written after Genesis and hundreds of years have passed in the narrative
- Abram followed God’s outline (years before the law is given in Deuteronomy)

o Land and people will be a blessing to ALL people

- V4- Eleazar – “this man” (One of Abram’s servants)
- V4- “from his own body”
- V6- Faith- didn’t see the fruit of the promise then, but he believed that God would do it
- More than having knowledge of God, Abram trusted God that he would do it for him
- V10- idea would be that this was done in a gully like ground formation (like a dip in the land)

- This is a land covenant and the blood would drain to the center of the dip

- This will occur in the time of Moses
- There will be failer in the land- but never doubt God for he will come through

V6- Abraham is offering hospitality (he is not quite sure who they are…) but if they were hostile, by Abraham offering service they would not harm him
- safety factor
- powerful looking, 3 strangers
- take some time to prepare the food
- These men were different than regular men.
- Abraham had been able to converse with them and realize there might be something different about them
- Abraham could have stood back and watched them eat- they were eternal, and different
- In middle eastern culture the genders and who they socialize with is very different than today
- Children up to the age of nine can move freely between men and women
- When a women wanted to hear what the men were speaking about she would either have to eavesdrop or … send the kids
- Jesus says. “let the little children come to me”

Abraham must have been trying to get God down to a number that
could save
-
God doesn’t want to destroy
-
Six people in Lots family…. Maybe
- Yeah, maybe they told just 4 people in their lifetime about the true God.
- And God would spare them! Just four people!!!
- But no, we learn in Chapter 19- ten people could not be found
- Witnessing is so important.
- Tell someone about the true God.
- Tell someone what He has done for you.
- It is why we are here on earth.
- Its our purpose.

But
- he was not expecting visitors and made “peta” bread- unleavened bread
V4.- before the angels had gone to bed- I
guess
V5- EVERY man from the city was at Lots house wanting to have sex with the new visitors- very plain
The Bible is usually figurative when it comes to these things but not here
V7- Lot is willing to sacrifice his own daughters to protect these men
- demands of hospitality and women in this time period are portrayed in this scene
V10- the angels pull back
V12-13- the angels tell

V6- God says ok a “clear conscience” you had…. But not clean
hands- it is still a sin to take more than one wife
-
God would not let him touch or sleep with Sarah- From her would
come the redemption of the world and God was not going to let anything stop that

V7- Abraham was a prophet- (listen to Gen 15) many things that
occur in his life parallel the rest of the Bible

salvation of the world on a white lie and almost made a huge mistake

Lesson:
“Blind Dating”
Genesis
23
V1-2- the only time that a woman’s death is mentioned in the Bible
V2- the Great Patriarch, Abraham mourned and wept for his wife
- Ecc. 3:4- there is a time to weep and mourn
- Mat. 5:4- Jesus says blessed are those who do mourn for they will be comforted- God can comfort in our mourning- let Him
- Psalms 126:5- Those who weep will bear much fruit- those who cry over the lost and have a desire for them to come to Christ will produce much fruit and rejoice
- John 16:28- Jesus tells His disciples that their grief will become joy
- John 11:35- If Jesus (the Perfect God) cried, then it wouldn’t hurt us to as well
V3- Abraham rose
- there is a time to stop mourning (Ecc 3)
- Good Example: Abraham knew when to stop mourning and moved onward in life for God.
- Bad Example: Jacob continually mourned and God could not use him at all. (Later we will study this in Genesis)
V4- Hebron is the place Abraham buries Sarah
- Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and Jacob will all be buried in this location
- People can still go see this sight today
V4- Abraham wants to purchase the land
V5- The Hittites want to give it to him (why? So Abraham will owe them a favor)
V7- Abraham insists on buying it
V10- they try again to give it
- if Abraham had accepted it, then today it would be under Muslim control
- Because he did not accept it as a gift and bought it, to this day it is under Jewish control
- The Muslims respect the book of Genesis (as a sacred text) and have not tried to take it back because of this event in Genesis 23
V12- Abraham says no I want to buy it
V14-15- Abraham purchases the property
Genesis
24
Time to find a wife for Isaac
V2- the same servant (Eliezer) who Abraham thought would inherit everything
- Upper inner thigh
- this was a personal, deep promise that if it was broken symbolized the oath on the descendents of that person
V3- this is an early perfect example of how Christians should not marry Non-Christians
- why? The difference between them is night and day
- the differences, desires, thought patterns and morals are as different as night and day and as opposite of heaven and hell.
- There is no such thing a “missionary dating”- it is not Biblical and does not work (2 Corinthians 6:14-16) (also read about the life of Sampson)
V6- Isaac does not go to the Land of the Canaanites
- because Abraham knows the lusts of the World and unbelievers and Isaac will get trapped in them
- Isaac doesn’t go there but his son, Jacob, will and it will get him into more trouble than you can imagine.
V10 long journey ahead
-
800 mile journey from
- Takes 10 camels with him
- Nahor- brother of Abraham
V11 the time the women come out- separated in this culture
- God has the timing all worked out
- A camel can drink 22 gallons of water
- 10 x 22
- 220 gallons of water the girl might have to draw
- If they only drank 5 gallons that’s 50 gallons total
V15
- In the extended family- available to marry Isaac- not a Canaanite
V16- virgin
- just as she should be for marriage- we are seeing a great example of marriage in Genesis 24
- she is drawing water in the evening- for her family
- draw water in the afternoon so the family can have it in the morning
- when Jesus meets the woman at the well, it is in the morning- showing that the woman is a social outcast
V21- He watches just to make sure the Lord had picked her out to be Isaacs’s wife
V22 gifts
- beka – 1/5th oz
- ten shekels- 4 oz
V26-27
- Eliezer must have been thrilled- God was confirming his prayer in choosing the right wife
V29- Laban
- Rebekah's brother- trickster
- Very important- greedy
V30- When Laban sees the gold…. He runs to greet Abraham
V33- Laban is the one carrying on the conversation…. Not her father-
- Laban is her brother (v28)
- In this culture daughters are to be sold as commodities to be sold
- The daughters are to leave, sons stay
- Opposite of our culture
V36- might have heard about Abrahams victories (Gen 15)
- Heron is on a trade route- must have heard about him
-
Anyone heading through the
V39-45- The servant recounts all the things that have happened that we have read
V45- prays in heart- the culture has the mind set that it happens in the heart
Greco-Romans have the thought that all ideas and motives happen in the mind
V49- Eliezer wants to know if Rebekah will marry Isaac-
- she would travel about 2 months back with him to Isaac and Eliezer know all about Isaac which he would tell her about him
V50- Bethuel- her father
V53- doesn’t have to give gifts to brother, but Laban brokered the deal… get some brownie points
V55- Laban loves Rebekah
V57- very unusual!
- the daughters don’t really have a say in marriage
- they call her and ask her
- very different that they respect her
V60- offspring is so important in the middle eastern culture
V63- Isaac is out at sunset thinking and pondering about his life
V64- They have eye contact from far away- Eliezer had told Rebekah about Isaac and i'm sure Eliezer described him to her

V1-
Abraham takes another wife- Keturah
- six more sons (v3-4)
- problem- where will the inheritance go?
- All sons would have some claim to the inheritance
- So Abraham goes and leaves it all to Isaac (before he dies) to fulfill the prophecy given by God
- … and gives gifts to the other 6 sons
V7-
175 years old- good old age
V8-
“gathered to his people”
- body is placed in a tomb (there in the desert)
- over the coarse of a year the flesh is melted away leaving only the bones
- family goes in and collects the bones

Ishmael is at his fathers funeral-

All of Ishmaels sons listed
V18-
in fulfillment of Gen 16 prophecy the brothers descendants are hostile against
each other

Laban (hidden agenda guy in Gen 24) is Rebekah’s brother
V23-
God is speaking to a woman- counter cultural in the time
- “two nations are in your womb” – sons
- The mid-wife would tell who is the firstborn
- “the older will serve the younger”
V25-
a hairy little red fellow- Esau means red
Jacob is graphing his ankle- Jacob means trickster or tripper
Rebekah never forgets this- at birth the younger is trying to flip the older over even now
V27-
Esau a hunter- Jews don’t hunt
- their philosophy is to depend on God and grow crops and raise flocks
- hunting is kind of doing it on your own to them
- Remember Nimrod in Gen 10
- Jacob stayed with the women at tents and cooked
V28-
she knows the younger will rise up- loves him more, she normally have all her
pride in the older because of the firstborn
V29- most likely lintels
- don’t go to the middle east unless ya like lintels cause they eat them quite frequently
- they have red lintels
- the Red one (Esau) likes anything red
V32-
the birth right is only good when the father dies- and Esau wanted the pleasure
of stew NOW
-
we can gather from this text that
- he didn’t care about eternal things
- had no idea about his culture nor the importance of the birthright
- we do that so much today and have no desire for the things of God.

~Philemon~this book is a letter- not an epistle
o Epistle- written to be read in a public setting and read aloud
o Letter- read by a private person
- Philemon is a private letter- we are reading someone else’s mail.
~ Background~
-
Paul is under house arrest in
- Written some time between AD 60-62
-
Written along with Eph, Phil, and
- This letter was to be delivered by Tycicus along with the epistle to Colossians (Col. 4:7-9)
~Slavery~
- 1st time a slave runs away and was captured he would be branded on his forehead
- 2nd time he could be killed
- 2/3 of the Roman population were slaves
-
Onesimus could run to a big city like
- Gal. 3:26- all people are equal in Christ
- Titus 2:9- slaves are to obey and treat their masters with respect so that they might come to know Christ
- 1 Tim 1:10- “slave traders” are placed in the same category as murderers
-
- But Paul never approves of slavery, he is the complete opposite
Philemon is an atomic bomb to slavery
-
eventually puts an end to slavery in the
-
when
- At the conclusion of the letter Philemon only has one choice- to let Onesimus be free
